Ecommerce SEO Migration Checklist: Before, During, and After Launch

Plan ecommerce migrations with URL mapping, relevant redirects, metadata checks, product discovery, and post-launch monitoring.

The short answer

A migration needs a tested URL map and release plan; no checklist can guarantee zero traffic fluctuation.

01 /

Build the baseline before changing the store

Export current product, collection, and editorial URLs. Add status codes, canonical destinations, important internal links, and available search and sales data. Include URLs with meaningful external links or campaign use even if recent traffic is low. Keep a dated snapshot outside the system being replaced.

Define the scope of the move: platform, domain, URL patterns, navigation, content, or all of these together. Separate essential changes from optional redesign decisions. When many variables change at once, diagnosis becomes harder. Agree on launch responsibilities, escalation contacts, and the conditions that would require delaying the release.

02 /

Map URLs to relevant destinations

Assign important old URLs to equivalent new pages wherever a real equivalent exists. Avoid sending every retired product to the homepage. An unrelated redirect can frustrate visitors and may be interpreted as a soft 404. Where no suitable replacement exists, select an appropriate removal strategy rather than inventing relevance.

Test the mapping against the actual new catalog. Product names can change while identifiers stay stable, making catalog IDs helpful for matching. Review high-value URLs manually and validate the complete map for loops, chains, and accidental many-to-one destinations. Preserve stable URLs when the platform and project permit it.

03 /

Check the new templates

Compare representative products, collections, guides, and paginated pages. Verify headings, metadata, canonical URLs, robots directives, structured data, images, and internal links. A new theme may remove content or change link rendering even when it looks similar to the old site.

Keep staging environments out of public search as appropriate, then confirm staging restrictions are not copied to production. Check the primary domain and HTTPS behavior. Update feeds, sitemaps, and external campaign destinations where needed. Test on mobile and with direct product links rather than inspecting only the homepage.

04 /

Run launch-day checks

Verify real production responses for the mapped URL sample, including important products and categories. Confirm that redirects reach final working destinations and that navigation links use the new preferred URLs. Submit the appropriate sitemap through Search Console when available and follow Google’s guidance for the type of site move.

Record the launch time and all emergency changes. Keep the old URL map and baseline available to the people monitoring the release. If orders or critical navigation break, prioritize customer access and operational stability. Search monitoring cannot compensate for a storefront that does not work.

05 /

Monitor by page group, not only total traffic

Review search performance, indexing signals, redirect errors, and landing-page outcomes after launch. Segment products, collections, and content so a problem in one template is not hidden by another group. Allow for search-engine reprocessing and recognize that fluctuations can occur.

When a group declines, compare old and new content, links, directives, and destinations before assuming the platform itself is the cause. Maintain redirects for an appropriate period following current guidance. A successful migration process reduces avoidable risk; it does not establish a guaranteed recovery timeline or eliminate every search fluctuation.
